  She was her special girl. She’d been so brave that night last year when the half-turn enforcer had gone after them. Now? She was healed up and only bore a scar on her hind end, but that was okay. Scars meant survival. She and Chaos were inseparable. Her warm, easy spirit settled the fire in his.

  Sam stood outside the trailer, Chaos’s lead rope in his hand as he petted his boy’s neck.

  Chaos belonged to Sam, and Sam belonged to Chaos. She’d never seen a more bonded pair of rider and horse. A slight smile lingered on his face. It existed most days, and that was a victory in itself.

  “Five minutes!” Wes barked out from on top his excited steed. His mate, Summer, was riding a red roan. Bryson was on his blue roan, Smoke. Hunter was on his favorite horse, and Maris and Sadey were riding quads. They were one helluva team behind the cattle. They didn’t even have to talk and yell at each other. They just knew what to do.

  “Are you sure you’re okay?” Sam asked her as she drew Trinity beside Chaos.

  “I swear, when we get pregnant, I’ll stay off the horses,” she promised. “But we only just started trying, and until it happens for us, I want to ride. I want to be with you and with our family. With our pack.”

  Sam leaned forward and kissed her. “What if you’re pregnant now?” he whispered, resting his hand on her tummy.

  “Then I would be the happiest woman in the world. I hope he looks like you.”

  “I hope he has your gentle heart,” he murmured against her ear. “I’ll saddle Trinity. You go hang with the girls.”

  She grinned as he walked away leading both horses. Wes and Hunter and Bryson were giving out directions, and Sam was taking them but dishing them back. They were camping out in the farthest pasture tonight. It was a late-in-the-day drive, so Maris had suggested they have a pack campout before they worked the cattle in the morning. It would be a long day of separating the mommas from the babies, castrating the calves, branding them, and giving them their de-wormer and vaccinations. It was auction season in another month, and the Kaid Brother’s Ranch was preparing.

  She was so. Damn. Happy.

  Day 382 of Sam’s rehabilitation: He only killed when something threatened her safety, he’d bonded to her, he’d mended things with his brothers, and Bryson was now as much his brother as Wes and Hunter were.

  And he wanted a wolf cub.

  That was another victory—one of many.

  He’d been terrified at first, afraid he would be a bad father, but over the last year as he’d worked on himself, he’d began to ask her for more roots. And one of those roots was a son. It was a continuation of the Kaid line. It was settling into a life he could be proud of.

  It was accepting the monster in him and being okay with the dark parts inside.

  It was learning to love her.

  Sam was striking, walking away with their horses, the sunset in front of him.

  He was hers, and she couldn’t be any prouder.

  The other mates came to join her, Maris, Sadey and Summer, standing on either side of her, and this was the moment.

  Sam turned in the saturated evening light, and his smile was easy and pure. It was effortless and built just for her.

  I feel, he mouthed, and it drew a tearful smile from her.

  He’d never said “I love you,” but that was the equivalent, and he’d said it a hundred times.

  She’d made a monster feel.

  She put her hand over her heart and mouthed, I love you, too.

  And this…

  This wasn’t their happy ending.

  It was their happy beginning.
